It is possible to connect different devices with each other via radio frequency. The technology for this is called WiFi-Direct.
WiFi-Direct is a Outcome of Wi-Fi-Alliance
The Wi-Fi Alliance has over 600 members, including Intel, Apple, DELL, Microsoft and LG. A comprehensive list of members can be found here.
WiFi-Direct allows you to connect to each other with compatible devices without an Internet connection. This allows you to create a wireless network between two or more devices.
The principle is similar to the well-known Bluetooth or multiplayer mode of the Nintendo DS.
The range of such a connection is up to 200 metres.
Which devices are supported?
Many laptops, digital cameras, smartphones, BluRay players, tablets and WLAN sticks are WiFi Direct certified. Apple also makes use of it, but calls it “Airplay” and “AirDrop”. It can also be used to connect printers, headphones and keyboards. Entertainment devices are also included.
How to Check Whether Device Supports WiFi-Direct
Use the Windows command prompt to find out if your computer’s network connections support this technology. To do this, enter the command “ifconfig /all“.
If the entry Wi-Fi Direct appears in the Wireless Lan Adapter section, you can turn your PC into an access point, for example to establish a connection to a smartphone.
Under Linux, enter the command “iw list” in the shell. In the output, the terms P2P-client and P2P-GO should appear.
Purpose of WiFi-Direct
As the number of tech devices available in the market today grows, so do the areas of application.
Near Field Communication (NFC) exists to transmit information quickly and easily. Virtually all WLAN-capable devices are capable of this technology, even without a WiFi Direct certificate.
In combination with Miracast, you can also use WiFi-Direct to transmit the image of one device directly to the screen of another device.
Photos on your smartphone can be printed out on the wireless printer using a suitable app.
If each player has the same game installed on their smartphone, you can play in a team or against each other without the need for WiFi.
File sharing allows data to be transferred from the smartphone to the computer. The setup is usually done quickly.
